Patent Searching Basics

Patent Searching Basics In-Person

Join us for this FREE workshop presented by John Meier, Science Librarian at the Physical and Mathematical Sciences Library in the Pennsylvania State University Libraries at University Park. Attendees will gain an understanding of the different protections afforded by copyright, patents, and trademarks, learn how to locate relevant patents through an understanding of patent metadata and patent information systems, and practice advanced search strategies such as classification searching and prior art searching in order to comprehensively search patents.

John is the University Libraries' liaison to departments of Mathematics and Statistics at University Park and is the Patent and Trademark Resource Center librarian for Penn State.  John attends annual training at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and provides frequent consultations to both Penn State and community inventors on their ideas.  He leads many workshops and guest lectures in intellectual property information searching.  John holds an MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh and MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
